PUTNAMVILLE — Saturday night brought a wealth of racers both young and old to Lincoln Park Speedway as nearly 100 cars packed the pits and a massive field of 58 youngsters were on hand to compete in the “Little Feet Challenge” bicycle races that were contested before the ‘B’ Main races.
In sprint car action, a 20-car field was topped by Jon Sciscoe, who has had strong runs in all three appearances in the Paul Hazen-owned No. 57. Sciscoe added a feature victory on Saturday night to sixth and fourth-place finishes the last two trips to the Putnamville oval. Sciscoe was able to hold off a spirited challenge from Scotty Weir down the stretch to put the Bud’s Auto Salvage, Geiger Seamless Guttering, Physical Medical Consultant, Kercher Racing Engine sprinter in victory lane.
In the UMP Modified feature, Richie Lex scored his third feature win of the season and second of the weekend after scoring a victory at Bloomington on Friday evening. After losing an engine recently, Gary Burton loaned the Lex team a power plant that obviously is up to snuff as “Mr. Excitement” put the Schaeffers Specialized Lubricant, Indianadirtscoops.net, Jackson Oil Solvent sponsored No. 7 in the winners circle ahead of multiple time defending champion, Paul Bumgardner.
The UMP Super Stock feature had its first new winner of the season after Troy Clark had won the first three main events. Dustin Shoulders, who moved up from the bomber class this season, put his Durabuilt Racing, Marsh Farms, Curtis Garage, DK Designs, Freije & Freije Auctioneers, Nutralawn No. 65 out front and held off Doug McCulloug for much of the feature to take the checkered flag.
The final feature of the night went to a familiar driver as C.J. Bryan won his third feature of the year over hard charging David Wallen, who took the runner-up spot after flashing through the field from a 15th starting position.
Ethan Barrow and Weir were heat race winners in the sprint car division and started in row two behind Kent Christian and Sciscoe.
From the opening green flag, Sciscoe proved that he had power to spare on starts and he used that to get the jump after several cautions and quickly building sizable leads. Barrow and Weir were in a dogfight behind Sciscoe followed by Christian and Ryan Pace. AJ Hopkins was putting on a show as he looked for an opening to move into the top-three. However, an encounter with the cushion would derail his run, which ended in a 17th-place finish behind Christian.
Joshua Clemons was also making a big run as he made the bottom work to his advantage. Clemons picked off seven competitors on his way to a fifth-place evening. Up front however, Sciscoe was untouchable on the re-starts, but Weir made his way up to second with a pass of Barrow and closed in on Sciscoe late in lapped traffic.
Sciscoe maintained his lead as Pace shuffled past Barrow in the closing circuits as lappers played a role in holding up Barrow to enable Beauchamp to get past as well. Weir made a final threat to Sciscoe’s lead, but on this night it was “The Mayor” that would pick up the win in the Rod End Supply, K&N Racing Parts, Keco, U.S. Automation sponsored car.
Barrow, Troy Link, Matt Goodnight, Chris Babcock and Shawn Krockenberger wrapped the top-10.
A loaded 28-car modified field was on hand Saturday, including UMP National Points leader Devin Gilpin, who won heat No. 2. Lex was unfazed as he picked up heat No. 3 with Chris Brewer winning the first heat.
Gilpin, seeking his 10th feature win of the young season, started third behind Kenny Carmichael Jr. and Lex. Brewer was outside of row two with Brian Amos and John DeMoss in row three.
Lex led from the opening and green as Gilpin battled with Carmichael side-by-side as Paul Bumgardner and Brewer in tow. Brewer and Bradley Sterrett fought for fifth position. Up front, Lex held the competition in check after an early encounter with the cushion that nearly ended with the Morgantown driver on his roof. He quickly recovered to maintain the lead. Ironically it was the same turn three cushion that Gilpin made hard contact with and eventually ended his night.
Lex remained out front as Bumgardner challenged over the final few laps as Carmichael Jr. advanced to third ahead of Sterrett and DeMoss. Brewer took sixth ahead of Carmichael Sr., Craig Conyer, Jacoby Hines and Wes McClara.
Shoulders made his first super stock trip to victory lane this weekend as he held off McCullough throughout the feature. Kris Starks was in the thick of the chase Carmichael Jr. and Slick Griffin followed by Roy Bruce Jr. and David Bumgardner.
McCullough was tight on Shoulders bumper over the last few laps before mechanical problems slowed the No. 19m machine and left him in 16th-place. Shoulders would pick up his first win ahead of Starks, Carmichael Jr., Bumgardner and Mike Staggs. Justin Hammond was sixth with AJ Smith, Steve Sheeks, Chad Nolte, who came from the back of the pack to ninth and Josh Fagg in 10th.
In the bomber feature, Michael Harris and Doug McCullough battled up front along with Marlin Burns in the early stages of the A-main. Bryan was forced to start 10th according to track rules for winners of the previous week’s feature. Harris held the lead as Josh Settles made the challenge and grabbed the lead. Burns was sidelined with a lost wheel in the first half of the race. Bryan made his way to the front and joined the lead pack with Tony Tidwell Sr., Josh Presley and Wallen in a three-way fight for position.
Bryan would eventually make the pass for the lead as Settles slipped to eighth after hard contact with the wall in the final laps. Wallen charged to second-place with Harris and Daniel Foxworthy, moving up from a 16th-place starting spot to fourth followed by Presley.
Next week will be Armed Services Night with a slate of sprints, modifieds, super stocks and bombers.

Going on Sale at Menards Stores near Winchester Speedway

(WINCHESTER, Ind.) – In addition to roles as the presenting sponsor of the ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards and as a co-primary sponsor on Frank Kimmel’s No. 44 Ansell/Menards Toyota, Menards is participating heavily in promotion of the Sunday, June 24 Herr Foods Chase the Taste 200 at Winchester Speedway.

As the ARCA Racing Series continues through its 60th Anniversary Season, race fans in Indiana and Ohio have the chance to “Save Big Money” on tickets to see the action live.

Starting tomorrow – Friday – fans can buy tickets for the ARCA race at $20 – a $7 discount off of the advertised at-track price – at nine Menards stores near the track.

The store locations are: Anderson; Celina, Ohio; Muncie; Richmond; Sidney, Ohio; Tipp City, Ohio; and three in Fort Wayne.

The in-store ticket promotion will last until Saturday, June 23, one day before the race.

While in the store, race fans and customers can also enter a promotion to win four VIP tickets, at-track hospitality, and the chance to wave the green flag at the start of the race, among other prizes. The promotion begins tomorrow and will end on Sunday, June 17.

The Herr Foods Chase the Taste 200 will begin at 2 p.m. on Sunday, June 24, with practice and Menards Pole Qualifying presented by Ansell taking place the day before. Each driver in the starting field will participate in a Sunday on-track autograph session from noon to 1 p.m., just before the green flag. Winchester Speedway is located at 2656 W. State Rd. 32 in Winchester.

The ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards has crowned an ARCA national champion each year since its inaugural season in 1953, and has toured over 200 race tracks in 28 states since its inception. The series has tested the abilities of drivers and race teams over the most diverse schedule of stock car racing events in the world, visiting tracks ranging from 0.4 mile to 2.66 miles in length, on both paved and dirt surfaces as well as a left- and right-turn road course in its most recent season. This year, the series visited Alabama’s Mobile International Speedway for the first time. In June, the first event at Minnesota’s Elko Speedway will give ARCA a race in a 29th state.

Founded by John and Mildred Marcum in 1953 in Toledo, Ohio, the Automobile Racing Club of America (ARCA) is recognized among the leading sanctioning bodies in the country. Closing in on completing its sixth decade after hundreds of thousands of miles of racing, ARCA administers over 100 race events each season in three professional touring series and local weekly events.

DAVE CALDERWOOD, AGE 69

Dave Calderwood, a long-time car owner and supporter of cars in all three National series, passed away at home in Bakersfield, California on Saturday, April 28th after an extended illness.

Calderwood’s cars were iconic in winning races on both the Midget & Silver Crown circuits in the 1990s. His familiar look on a race car returned in 2010 when Tracy Hines, who had driven for Calderwood in the past, started campaigning the #4 with Calderwood and his company, MP Environmental Services. Hines has now tallied four wins for the team in this span, including on April 21st at the famed Eldora Speedway.

Calderwood was known as one of the best and most likeable car owners in USAC while employing some of the most famous names in the sport, including Kenny Irwin, Jr., Jimmy Sills, Ryan Newman, and Jeff Gordon, along with Hines.

Like Father, Like Son: Brandon McReynolds Wins After Last-Lap Pass at Talladega

Like Father, Like Son: Brandon McReynolds Wins

After Last-Lap Pass at Talladega

(TALLADEGA, Ala.) – Brandon McReynolds passed Matt Lofton on the final lap at Talladega Superspeedway this evening to win the International Motorsports Hall of Fame 250, his first ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards win in seven career starts.

The win was sweet redemption for the 20-year-old Turner Motorsports driver, who ran out of fuel and lost the lead on the final lap at Daytona International Speedway two months ago. McReynolds’ (No. 32 Turner Motorsports/Win-Tron Racing Chevrolet) drive to Talladega’s Victory Lane came 20 years and one day after Davey Allison’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series win at the track – an effort led by crew chief Larry McReynolds, Brandon’s father.

“Talladega’s one of these places where anything can happen,” McReynolds said. “It’s a big race track, as big as we go to, and everyone seems to reach down and find a little more confidence. It’s just cool to go to Victory Lane, knowing that Dad, and Dale Earnhardt and Davey Allison and those people that Dad worked with had so much success here. That’s what means most to me. Being able to do that with Turner Motorsports and all the people involved means that much more, because they’re the only people that have given me a shot to come out here and race and not worry about the politics, not worry about money. They have a great organization, and I wouldn’t want to do it anywhere else.”

Lofton (No. 16 Strutmasters.com Chevrolet) finished 0.195 second behind in second place, having led 55 total laps. Chad Hackenbracht (No. 58 Kindify Chevrolet) led 38 laps late in the race and provided most of the winning outside push for McReynolds before finishing third.

“The 58 was really fast and I just backed up into him and he stuck with me,” said McReynolds, who started 10th. “He could have hung me out to dry. 16 bounced off us a bit. That’s just good, hard racing, and that’s how it looked from my eyes. It was a lot of fun.”

Lofton led from the green flag, having accepted the first position by virtue of leading the 2011 owner points when Menards Pole Qualifying presented by Ansell was rained out Thursday. Lofton kept the first position even as Frank Kimmel (No. 44 Ansell/Menards Toyota) improved one position from the third starting spot. The two led a breakaway fluctuating between eight to 10 cars over the first 10 laps, with Lofton holding just more than a 0.1-second advantage the entire time.

Talladega’s classic “big one” came early, when Steve Blackburn spun after contact and started an 11-car incident on the frontstretch, causing a red flag for 17 minutes and 43 seconds. Notable drivers eliminated early were Daytona winner and runner-up Bobby Gerhart and Drew Charlson, respectively, Salem winner Alex Bowman, Joey Coulter, and Milka Duno.

Lofton led the field to the green flag to start Lap 17, but Roger Carter smacked the wall to bring another caution at Lap 20. Kimmel was one of several drivers to pit for fuel, closing Lap 21 with a visit to his crew from the second position. Just before the Lap 28 green flag, Kimmel drove to pit road again to top off his tank, and re-entered the race 22nd.

An eight-car pack broke away by about five seconds over the next 10 laps, with Lofton leading Brandon Davis, Hackenbracht, Chris Buescher, McReynolds, Kevin Swindell, Steve Blackburn, and Ryan Reed. The eight cars ran approximately 1.4 seconds apart, with the ninth-place driver about six seconds off of the lead.

A Lap 52 yellow flag for debris on the race track sent the leaders to pit road to close Lap 53, with Lofton surrendering the first position for the first time all day. Hackenbracht won the race off of pit road, just edging Lofton and McReynolds. McReynolds had originally lined up second, with Corr and Lofton following him, but review showed that Lofton had earned the second position out of the pits.

Nonetheless, Corr had improved substantially into the fourth position, with Davis and Blackburn filling out the top six. Kimmel, having not pitted, improved to seventh with nephew Will Kimmel eighth for the Lap 57 restart.

Reed, having just experienced trouble moving out of his pit stall to lose numerous positions, spun in Turn 4 quickly after the green flag, forcing another caution period. Mikey Kile spun after contact from Larry Barford Jr., and John Ferrier crashed into the backstretch wall soon after the next restart, but the field got away clean after the Lap 69 green flag.

Hackenbracht, Lofton, McReynolds, and Corr continued to lead, with Hackenbracht’s advantage over Lofton mirroring Lofton’s earlier in the race – about 0.1 second. The single-file train continued to hug the yellow line, as 13 cars ran within 1.628 seconds at Lap 71.

Mike Affarano crashed on Lap 75, rolling several times down the frontstretch before having to be rolled over by Talladega Superspeedway and ARCA safety crews. He walked to a nearby ambulance. Meanwhile, the field continued to drive under the yellow flag, having been forced to drive down pit road each time around.

The green flag flew at Lap 85, with Hackenbracht getting a good jump away from Lofton and McReynolds. An 11-car break formed, but Brett Hudson lost his hood as it flew off of his car and just over Chris Buescher, who drove behind him near the back of the top 20. The caution flag flew again, setting up a final dash to the finish.

Hackenbracht continued to lead out of the Lap 91 restart, but Lofton looked to the outside in Turn 1, a piece of foreshadowing in a race otherwise dominated by driving on the bottom line. McReynolds and Corr started to follow him on the outside line, but Corr was eventually shuffled away. Lofton took the lead and McReynolds followed for second; Tom Hessert moved into fourth.

Lofton took the white flag with a 0.094-second lead, but McReynolds and Hackenbracht held back to create a run. Hackenbracht started to push McReynolds on the outside, giving McReynolds just enough to pass Lofton. Light contact at the finish could not deter McReynolds, as he held a 0.195-second advantage at the start/finish line and, more importantly, an invitation to Victory Lane.

Hessert finished fourth, and Blackburn was fifth. Will Kimmel, Frank Kimmel, Brennan Poole, Davis, and Corr completed the top 10.

Six caution periods slowed the race for 38 laps. The race finished in two hours, 11 minutes, and 19 seconds, at an average speed of 114.246 mph.

Where has RJ Been?

Written By: RJ Cunningham

Well If Ya Want to Know:

Where is RJ, where was he the past 4 days. Not like him to not be all over Facebook and 5 email addresses.

I told you that my computer was down for a couple of days. Not really I just choose not to tell you all what I was doing. I will say though it is nice to have the music back on while I do tell ya though.

OK now to tell ya all…,

As all of you know by now there is not a single form of Racing I do not like. And because of that I meet all kinds of Racers, From Drag Racing to Sprint Car to Midgets, Modified and Dirt Late Model. From Tracks and track personnel and all in between Including SCCA Road Racers.

So now to a few years back I traveled with a couple of Road Racers and SCCA (Sports Car Club of America) and some of the road racers were Julie and Bill P.  Bill the racer, Julie the boss and me the gopher. And in doing so I met Jeanie and Jay SCCA Teck Inspectors or Scrutinieer(s).  (they still kinda fight over who the boss is) and me the gopher. Now Julie and Jeanie Bill and Jay all love animals dogs in particular. Both Julie and Jeanie have been doing something for a while now that kind of touched me a bit. So when Julie had a prior obligation and could not go this time Jay Quinn called me the Gopher and Driver. Once a month, for quite a while now Vans are driven from Indiana to all over the east coast delivering animals to new homes that were would be scheduled to be put down In Indiana Humane shelters because of overcrowding.

Jeanie and I drove one of those vans which by the way came at a much discounted rate thanks to Enterprise Rental (keep that in mind with your next rental please). Now to the trip.

I left on Thursday at 6 am and went to Bloomington IN with Jeanie and picked up our Van, Loaded with some of the dogs from Southern Indiana shelters and then made our way up to Indianapolis and met at the Shelter on Indianapolis’s south side. We unloaded our dogs and spent. An hour and a half sorting all these wonderful cool dogs 93 in all with 5 other Vans and Cathy the head Volunteer and her co-Driver     after some much needed and very organized instruction we all headed out to Cleveland Ohio and there we let all the dogs walk. A very stressful ride for some and to other dogs they were just as happy as could be. Jeanie and I had Rusty, Debbie, Harper, and Harper Bell, Pistol (and he was) lol Paisley, Brownie, and more. We had a total of 15 I think. Without sleep I cannot remember and all of these dogs were on the way to new forever homes with a total of 14 Volunteer’s and those that met us at Cleveland and the other shelters on the east coast. We went to Vermont and met two other shelters at McDonald’s and saw all these great doges be dropped off for homes.  Other Vans went to other places with a budget for driving all provided my donations (Hint Hint) Donate Please..

The weather in the beginning was great and I knew I would not be able to go to the races this week and at first kind of missed it but to see these dogs and know that I along with others were changing their futures in a very positive way was so cool. I am on the road just too much to have a dog. But I sure did have fun getting my dog fix in. and if they need my help again and I have to miss a race or two. Guess what?

I RJ Cunningham the Racing gopher and Writer will be helping again. Just not during the Indy 500.

Now to sort thru almost 500 emails wish me luck posting racing news. And adding new Facebook Friends

RJ Cunningham

Runner-Up Finish a Good Sign Before Kimmel’s 50th Birthday;

News & Notes from ARCA’s 91st Race at Salem Speedway

(TOLEDO, Ohio) – Despite a hard charge to the finish in Sunday’s Kentuckiana Ford Dealers 200 at Salem Speedway, Frank Kimmel just missed on earning his long-awaited 75th ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards win. However, as he celebrates his 50th birthday today, Kimmel can count numerous positives.

“We finally got a finish we deserved,” he said, minutes after earning his first top-10 finish for ThorSport Racing. “All year long, we’ve run pretty decent but haven’t had a good finish. Today, we threw everything at it we could. We had a good car at the end, probably the best it had been all day.”

Kimmel (No. 44 Ansell/Menards Toyota) lost a sure top-10 finish at Daytona in February when he was penalized while driving to the checkered flag, causing him to finish 23rd. At Mobile in March, Kimmel lost a top-five position and finished 17th after contact with Alex Bowman (No. 22 St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital Dodge), the same driver he chased to the finish at Salem.

Kimmel drove within a half-second of Bowman in the final 10 laps, but could not catch the 19-year-old.

“Bowman was running hard, and he was just a little better all day,” Kimmel said. “I wanted to get to him, but couldn’t quite get there. It was a great run for a great crowd, and everyone on the team did a nice job on the pit stops. The car, there’s hardly a scratch on it. You come through that mess like that, you’ve had a pretty good day.”

After leading by more than 10 seconds at one point in the race, Bowman certainly saw Kimmel coming after later restarts shortened gaps in the field.

“You definitely don’t want to see that bright yellow 44 in your rearview mirror here,” Bowman said in Victory Lane. “I’ve never seen a color stick out so much in a rearview mirror, so it’s pretty dang intimidating being here at his home track. I know he was a little upset with me after Mobile, so it means a lot for him to race me clean like that.”

Five days after finishing second at Salem, Kimmel will return to the site of what had been his most recent runner-up finish: Talladega Superspeedway. Kimmel held the lead on the final lap at Talladega last April prior to Ty Dillon’s pass just before the checkered flag.

“We’ll go there and try to get the best finish we can, try to stay out of trouble. We’re taking the same car we had at Daytona. The guys have worked on it, pretty much cut the whole body off of it and started over again. We haven’t tested it, so it’s kind of an open-ended book. We don’t know what we’re going to have, but it’s Talladega. We’ll get in there and race hard.”

The International Motorsports Hall of Fame 250 at Talladega – a 94-lap race – will begin Friday at 5 p.m. ET and air live on SPEED. ARCARacing.com will feature live timing and scoring coverage, as well as live audio coverage, as presented by WTDR Thunder 92.7 FM. The race will be the 50th for the ARCA Racing Series on the 2.66-mile oval.

Support High for Local Drivers: Drivers from southern Indiana and Kentucky received some of the loudest cheers Sunday afternoon at Salem Speedway – and that was not a sentiment reserved merely for current competitors.

Five past ARCA Racing Series race winners, ranging from ages 68 to 83 and combining for 35 total series wins, were honored in the pre-race ceremonies along with ARCA champions Frank Kimmel and Bill Venturini as part of ARCA’s 60th Anniversary Season.

Honored were: Andy Hampton, 83, a 20-time winner from New Albany, Ind.; Bill Kimmel Sr., 83, a three-time winner from Clarksville, Ind.; Bill Clemons, 78, a three-time winner from New Albany, Ind.; Charlie Glotzbach, 73, an eight-time winner from Georgetown, Ind.; and Ralph Jones, 68, who won a single race and lives in Upton, Ky.

As for the current drivers local to Salem Speedway, Clarksville’s Frank Kimmel finished highest, in second, ahead of Henryville’s Darrell Basham (14th; No. 34 Spirit of Henryville Chevrolet), Owensboro, Ky.’s Blake Hillard (24th, No. 10 Fast Track/Rockingham Speedway Chevrolet), and Sellersburg’s Will Kimmel (27th, No. 68 Kentuckiana Ford Dealers Ford).

Poole the New Points Leader: After making late repairs and having to start at the back of the Kentuckiana Ford Dealers 200 field, Brennan Poole (No. 25 Adcetera Chevrolet) still finished third in his second Salem Speedway appearance for Venturini Motorsports. He had been gaining ground quickly in the first half of the race, but lost momentum when caught behind a Lap 95 incident in Turn 2.

Poole lamented missing a repeat of his May 2011 win at Salem, but emerged happy as the new driver points leader in the ARCA Racing Series.

“Earlier in the race, we were just as fast as the 22 (Bowman) and maybe a little bit better, but we got involved in that accident and bounced it off the wall a few times, which slowed us up,” Poole said. “We got four tires that last stop, and were just way too tight. We did the best we could. To start last and end up third is an awesome day. We’re in this thing for the championship. It would have been awesome to get a repeat win. We were close today, but we’ll take the points lead and go on to Talladega and then Toledo. Those are a couple of great tracks for us so I’m excited.”

Poole’s 605 points lead race winner Alex Bowman’s 560 and Chris Buescher’s (No. 17 Roulo Brothers Racing Ford) 545. The rest of the top 10 includes: Tom Hessert (No. 52 Federated Auto Parts Chevrolet) and Mikey Kile (No. 1 ModSpace Ford), 530; Ryan Reed (No. 15 RaceHard.com/JDRF Chevrolet), 525; Chad Hackenbracht (No. 58 Tastee Apple Chevrolet), 505; Frank Kimmel, 480; Will Kimmel, 415; and Chase Elliott (No. 9 Aaron’s Dream Machine/Hendrickcars.com Chevrolet) and Clint King (No. 66 Warehouse Design Chevrolet), 410.

The official ARCA Racing Series point standings will be released Tuesday.

Bowman Three for Five: Just 12 months after 2011 ARCA champion Ty Dillon earned his third ARCA victory in five starts, Alex Bowman did the same in winning the Kentuckiana Ford Dealers 200. Bowman won at Madison International Speedway and Kansas Speedway last season.

In addition to that distinction, Bowman earned honors as the Team Messina Rookie of the Race and the Aaron’s Lap Leader of the Race. Bowman edged Poole Sunday for the race’s top rookie honors, but Poole continues to lead the overall rookie standings. Bowman led 146 laps Sunday and has led 189 over the last two, and now leads the year-long Aaron’s Lap Leader standings outright.

Elliott Earns Second Top-10, Looks to Next Entry: Chase Elliott will have to wait two months for his next start in the ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards, but leaves his first stint having scored two top-10 finishes and a tie for 10th in series points. Elliott finished fourth at Salem Sunday.

“Obviously, I wish we could have been three spots better, but I think I learned a lot,” said the 16-year-old. “We could use some help on the car and I could do a better job driving, so we definitely learned a lot for when we come back. We were really tight the whole race and the bumps just upset our race car. It made our car really slide the nose. We’ll get to the shop and work on it.”

Elliott’s next scheduled race is the July 1 event at New Jersey Motorsports Park’s Thunderbolt Raceway, a 2.25-mile road course.

“I used to race road courses when I was really little, go-karts and stuff,” Elliott said. “I’ve raced them in legends cars a little bit, but nothing like this. We need to go do a lot of testing.”

Top-Five Finish a Success for Young Jones: Having become the first 15-year-old driver in the ARCA Racing Series last month at Mobile, it only makes sense that Erik Jones’ fifth-place finish at Salem Sunday makes him the first 15-year-old to earn a top-five on ARCA’s top tour.

“It was a good day; we really bounced back from (Saturday),” said Jones, who qualified 10th on Saturday. “We didn’t have the greatest day, and to come back with a top-five is really a successful day. I’m pretty happy with it.”

One of six Venturini Motorsports drivers in the race, Jones and teammates Clint King and Brennan Poole were often seen driving in a line with one another inside the top five. Team manager Billy Venturini addressed Jones and King – who finished sixth – together after the race, congratulating the two on working well together.

“They all raced me clean, and we race each other like we want to be raced,” Jones said. “If one comes up on another fast, we’re going to let him go. Everybody did a great job on this CJ Solar Band Chevrolet. I’m looking forward to my next one, at Toledo.”

Williams Takes Hard Charger Award: Josh Williams rose from 16th at the start to ninth at the finish, gaining seven spots to win the CGS Imaging Hard Charger of the Race award. Williams’ seven-position gain was higher than any other non-provisional driver running the CGS Imaging decal and participating in the Hard Charger program.

Pre-Race Favorite Buescher Ends Seventh: After leading the final practice and winning the Menards Pole Award presented by Ansell with the fastest Salem Speedway qualifying lap in three years, Chris Buescher could only lead 39 laps and had to settle for a seventh-place finish.

Buescher had charged through the field in the first half of the race after an early pit stop set him back, but had trouble gaining as much ground after falling back again later.

“It was something we were hoping wouldn’t happen, a huge fall-off on tires,” Buescher said. “For the first 40 laps on a set, the car was really good and really fast. Overall, we still finished the race in some kind of a points race, for what it’s worth this early. It’s disappointing, but you’ve got to have these days.”

Buescher remained confident about his chances for Friday at Talladega, where he finished fifth last season in his first attempt.

“That’s not much time to get there, but we’ll be showing up, us and (teammate) Brandon Davis,” he said. “We should have two good pieces to make another run at the win there.”

Remembering the Intimidator: Sunday marked what would have been the late Dale Earnhardt’s 61st birthday. Even in the midst of his seven NASCAR Cup championships, Earnhardt found some time to drive in ARCA. He made two starts in the early 1990s, finishing 30th on the Heartland Park road course in Topeka, Kan. on August 4, 1991 and fifth at Texas World Speedway on March 21, 1993.

Kimmel Racing Hosts Open House: Friday, the night before on-track action started at Salem Speedway, Kimmel Racing held an open house at the team’s shop in Clarksville, Ind. Self-guided shop tours, food and drink, live music, and a classic car show were all part of the bash that attracted over 450 guests. ARCA Racing Series drivers Will Kimmel, Sean Corr, Chad Hackenbracht, Korbin Forrister, and Austin Rettig signed autographs, as did several of the retired drivers who appeared at Sunday’s pre-race ceremonies.

Bill Elliott Meets Fans at Track: Bill Elliott, owner of son Chase Elliott’s No. 9 Chevrolet and the 1988 NASCAR champion, joined ARCA Racing Series drivers for the on-track autograph session that took place two hours before Sunday’s 200-lap race. Elliott signed collector cards featuring some of the more memorable images from his oft-recognized racing career.

While some expected Bill Elliott to spot for his son at Salem Speedway, Billy Wilburn spotted for the No. 9 car instead. Wilburn is known both as a sprint car driver and as a former crew chief for Rusty Wallace, Dale Jarrett, Bobby Labonte, and Kyle Petty, among others.

Drivers Earn Highs: Outside of Chase Elliott and Erik Jones, several other drivers earned their best ARCA Racing Series finishes within the top 20. Tyler Reddick (No. 18 Broken Bow Records/Stoney Creek Records Chevrolet) was eighth, just ahead of Mason Mingus (No. 32 811 Call Before You Dig Toyota) in 10th. Ryan Reed finished 11th, ahead of Austin Rettig (No. 01 Rettig Racing Dodge) in 18th and Larry Barford Jr. (No. 04 First Mariner Bank/Trauma Doc Dodge) in 19th.

Blake Hillard made his series debut, finishing 24th.
